They say a mother’s smile is the light of the ho

They say a mother’s smile is the light of the home. I’ve been blessed with brightness for so long as to take it for granted. Only now I understand how difficult it is to keep a smile, how much effort it takes and how much richness it brings. My mom, my sister, and I came to the USA in ‘64 to join my dad who had come a couple of years earlier to find a spot for his young family to land. Mom left her family and budding teaching career in Yucatan for new opportunity in Los Angeles. She spoke no English and had no prospects for a job. She soon found work sewing in the garment district but didn’t want to leave her young children with a sitter so my dad bought her an industrial Singer machine for 200 dollars that they paid off 20 a month. We would take the bus downtown from our apartment on Olympic and Western and bring back stacks of cut fabric for her to assemble into garment pieces. I remember falling asleep to the sound of the machine stopping and staring as she sewed piece after piece. She took courses at home to learn English and eventually worked as a preschool teachers aide and then along side my dad in the family business. Most all the time with a smile and a positive attitude. So many years of effort to keep the light shining. Happy Mother’s Day to you mom, and all the mothers who smile to keep the home in our hearts bright.
